Stochastic Structural Optimization presents a comprehensive picture of robust design optimization of structures, focused on nonparametric stochastic-based methodologies. Good practical structural design accounts for uncertainty, for which reliability-based design offers a standard approach, usually incorporating assumptions on probability functions which are often unknown. By comparison, a worst-case approach with bounded support used as a robust design offers simplicity and a lower level of sensitivity. Linking structural optimization with these two approaches by a unified framework of non-parametric stochastic methodologies provides a rigorous theoretical background and high level of practicality. This text shows how to use this theoretical framework in civil and mechanical engineering practice to design a safe structure which accounts for uncertainty.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have been widely used in the electric vehicles (EVs) due to their high-power density, large torque-to-inertia ratio, high reliability, etc. This book involves emerging control strategies of the non-salient and salient PMSMs operating in the flux-weakening region. The optimization algorithms, such as adaptive velocity particle swarm optimization (AVPSO) and genetic optimization (GA) algorithms, are also presented, including the offline optimization procedures. The advanced control strategies like improved field-oriented control (FOC) and model-predictive control (MPC) are explicitly investigated in detail. The parameters optimization presented in this book is based on the new cost function of the error value matrix for the proportional-integral (PI) controllers. A new cost function is deduced from the Taylor series expansion form to obtain the linearized equilibrium part of the advanced control strategy. Additionally, the stability terms are considered to obtain high performance in speed tracking at the flux-weakening region. In this book, a real-time AVPSO algorithm is used in the continuous control model predictive control.
