How can cognition, a concept traditionally associated with the human brain, be applied to satellite systems? For the first time, cognitive system meanings and models are applied to the uncertain environmental processes of satellite systems. The authors of this book go beyond defining 'cognitive satellite systems' to design a cognitive satellite communication system architecture with satellite-to-ground coordination, which has uses in emergency response spacecraft and prediction technology.
People put forward the concept of “software star” on the basis of software radio. The software star has a payload that uses software radio as the general hardware and defines functions through software. The wireless remote control channel can upload, update and upgrade the corresponding functional software, so as to enrich and enhance the performance of the satellite payload at a lower cost with communication, reconnaissance, interference detection and positioning and other functions. This book puts forward the concept of “cognitive satellite”, based on cognitive sciences such as cognitive radio and cognitive radar, and forms intelligent payloads with flexible reconstruction of functional components and various modern signal processing technologies. “Cognitive satellite” is a more advanced form of “software star”. Due to the integration with cognitive science and technology, it has an essential improvement in function.
Cognitive satellites, which are represented by cognitive radio, cognitive dynamic systems and artificial intelligence, are a more intelligent spatial information processing system. Based on the perception of the current environment, it can adjust its internal configuration in a timely manner through understanding and learning about the environment to adapt to the statistical changes of the environment, and to ensure that the space business is completed effectively and reliably according to the corresponding models and mechanisms. It will become an important direction for the development of future space information technology applications.
Cognitive satellite is a spatial information system capable of autonomously processing complex dynamic information in space. Traditional satellites include hardware resources and software resources. Hardware resources include vehicles, spacecraft, and ground stations. Software resources include spectrum and information resources. Cognitive satellites are a further upgrade of satellites in the traditional sense.
Because the spatial information system environment is extremely bad, cognitive satellites are not just simple applications of cognitive science and technology on satellites, and major adjustments must be made to meet the needs of the space. Perception of various information in space, feature extraction of perceptual information, establishment of a centralized and distributed sensing environment, synthesis of various perceptual information, abstraction of cognitive description language, and construction and learning of a strategy library for dealing with various features are the focus of cognitive satellite research.
Cognitive satellite is an intelligent information processing system. It can sense the surrounding environment and adjust the transmission parameters (such as transmission power, carrier frequency and modulation technology) in real time to achieve high reliability and high efficiency of business services whenever and wherever. According to the definition of cognitive satellites, cognitive satellites should have the following two main characteristics:
(1) Cognitive satellites should have the ability to perceive or capture information from the wireless environment, user environment, and system environment in which they operate, to identify unused service resources at specific times and spaces, and to select the most appropriate information and knowledge of operating parameters. (2) Cognitive satellites should have the ability to dynamically adjust and reconstruct parameters based on cognitive information without causing harmful interference to users, and use cognitive satellite payload resources to provide reliable service capabilities.
