This book acts as a ready reckoner both for students and instructors. The course is a prerequisite to many advanced courses, such as Wireless Networks, Wireless Technology, Wireless Sensor Networks, Wireless Ad-hoc Networks, Enterprise Design Networks, and Network Design to name a few. Also, the course is studied by many branches of Engineering, thus creating the need for a simple and single book for the students which meets all their requirements. This book has been written keeping these views in mind.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Computer Networks
This chapter introduces the basic terms and terminologies used in computer networks. It also gives a ­comparative study of the technologies and terminologies used in computer networks.

Chapter 2: Physical Layer
This chapter discusses the physical layer functionalities and gives an in-depth analysis of the Guided and Unguided media.

Chapter 3: Data Link Layer
In this chapter, the services of the data link layer are described. The chapter focusses on the two sub-layers of the DLL in brief explaining their roles with standard examples.

Chapter 4: Network Layer
This chapter talks about the network layer services and protocols. The IP addressing and routing functions of the network layer are explained with examples at appropriate discussions.

Chapter 5: Transport Layer
This chapter introduces the difference between connection-oriented and connectionless services. It also walks the readers through the standard protocols, such as UDP and TCP.

Chapter 6: Session Layer
This chapter explains the session layer design issues. RPC protocol is also discussed in detail in this chapter.

Chapter 7: Presentation Layer
This chapter briefs the services offered by the presentation layer. A step-by-step study of the compression techniques is also provided in this chapter.

Chapter 8: Application Layer
This chapter describes the application layer protocols with suitable figures to support the description.

Chapter 9: Network Design
This chapter takes a step in the direction of network design with the foundation laid by the preceding ­chapters. It elaborates the guidelines for network design and rules to be followed to create a design template for any given network.
