Название: Applications of 5G and Beyond in Smart Cities Автор: Ambar Bajpai, Arun Balodi Издательство: CRC Press Год: 2023 Страниц: 216 Язык: английский Формат: pdf (true) Размер: 10.19 MB
This book explores the potential of 5G and beyond technologies in smart city setup, as it offers high bandwidth and performance, and low latency. It starts with an introduction to 5G along with challenges, limitations, and research areas in future wireless communication including related need for transformation in societal paradigm and infrastructure requirement. Applications related to Visible Light Communication, network management in smart cities, role of 5G in public healthcare, safety, security, and transportation, and existing and planned 6G research framework are included.
5G is extended as a 5th-generation mobile technology that refers to the next version of mobile telecommunication standards beyond the existing 4G standard. The 5G network has been deployed worldwide in most locations and, further, is being enhanced to provide decent package services combined with advanced features. This technology is known for highly fexible and scalable network confgurations, enabling new levels of experience through support for advanced services based on three major application domains, namely enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC).
As a technological advancement, 5G offers better data transfer speeds, accuracy, latency, capacity, and greater and more fexible bandwidth to fulfll the requirements of different economic sectors for various uses and applications, while ensuring a new level of performance never before experienced. When we talk about download speed, a more interesting topic to the everyday user, this can reach 20 Gbps using a high level of New Radio (NR) carrier aggregation and high modulation techniques. Another exciting feature of this technology is that it can support one million devices per square km, unlike 4G which supports only ten percent of that capacity. This connection density feature of the technology is the most critical requirement for smart city development, where a huge number of devices or objects need seamless connectivity.
In the smart city concept, city infrastructure resources are connected through multiple devices, objects, or machines to allow real-time information exchange with superfast data processing, which is possible with 5G network characteristics. Furthermore, many applications in different areas are being transformed on 5G smart platforms, including agriculture, public transportation, healthcare, media, entertainment, the internet of things (IoT), manufacturing, energy and utilities, public safety, and fnancial services. This breakthrough technology is smartly enhancing our connected lives and defning the scope for innovation.
4G networks were mostly designed for mobile devices only and severely limited to a section of applications, while 5G networks target much more fexible use cases in broad domains touching almost all sectors of the economy. 5G technology offers a network slicing feature which functioning as different networks for different services at the same time. It provides a resilient cloud-based core network with end-to-end support for network slicing. Slices of the network can be defned for a specifc purpose and act as independent network layers for various applications.
