Healthcare has become an extremely important and relevant topic in day to day discussions. This has led to a renewed focus and attention that researchers from every discipline have put in to realize better strategies for healthcare management in general. This book is an attempt to put to use recent advancements in the field of the Internet of Medical Things often called IoMT, which is an extension of IoT for real-time, data analytics-driven prompt and quality healthcare to global citizens. Security has been always a challenge with pervasive technologies like IoMT and IoT, and thus usage of disruptive technology like blockchain to offset the security concerns that surround the data and network management. Therefore, this book is an honest attempt to provide directions to applied areas of research in IoMT for healthcare with the aid and help of Blockchain Technologies.

The Internet of Things is a combination of technologies and processes that are used to manage information retrieval from last-mile devices and create actionable insights after processing the data received from sensors. Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is a special case of IoT that pertains to the collection, processing, and storage of data from patients so that they can be provided healthcare using sensor-based information. The main issue with healthcare-related data handling systems is the security and privacy data that belonging to patients and healthcare providers. Blockchain technology is a disruptive technology that ensures security, necessary privacy, and consistency in information sets all at the same time. The title of the book, i.e., “Blockchain for Secure Internet of Medical Things (IoMedT)” amply indicates the significance of blockchain technologies in the effective and secure management of healthcare-related tasks based on data acquisition made through medical sensors. This is a composite field involving computer science, mathematics, network management, and security issues.

This book provides some valuable information on the integration of the domains of healthcare, the Internet of Things, and blockchain. The three technologies, if used wisely, can usher in a new era of pragmatic healthcare and ensure the security of data, which is critical to patients’ well-being. The Internet of Medical Things is a domain of study that sits on top of the strength of IoT components-structural and functional and has medical sensors as the last mile device that transmits data about healthcare parameters. The IoMT can be a game changer for those geographies where there is a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, as, through the usage of IOT-based communications, physicians sitting in different parts of the world can be alerted about health conditions and identify events around those conditions. Much has been achieved in terms of treating sensor data by driving it to cloud-based processing systems, and lots of actionable insights are created under the processing power of servers available in the cloud. The key always has been how secure data can be kept especially when it is about the health and well-being of individuals.

This data, if it falls into malicious hands, can be used to wreak havoc of unimaginable proportions. Blockchain technologies by nature of it provide robust and trustworthy mechanisms to store, retrieve, and utilize data securely and efficiently. Blockchain has many use cases found in cryptocurrencies, risk assessment, land records management, and so on. Blockchain when put to use in managing healthcare parameters-related data of individuals can effectively allay fears of mishandling and illicit usage of data by parties who wish to exploit it for their wrongful needs. Blockchain has proven over time its effectiveness while providing security and privacy to data in other forms. This book promises to provide insights into how IoT and IoMT are related, and how these practices can benefit from blockchain technologies so that safety, security, and privacy issues are taken care of in a rightful manner.

This book has come at a relevant time and provides necessary technical insights into the domain of IoMT and the suitability of blockchain technology to supplement security challenges in IoMT.
