The purpose of this edited book is to present and showcase the basic fundamentals, applications, and integration of both IoT and Blockchain. In this paradigm shift, Internet of Things (IoT) plays a vital role in connecting the cyberspace of computing systems and the physical industrial environment. IoT aims to improve production throughput and operation efficiency and to mitigate the machine downtime. Decentralization of IoT systems, heterogeneity of IoT data, diversity of systems and IoT devices, and network complexity are the characteristic features of IoT. Owing to the massiveness of IoT and inadequate data security, the impact of security breaches may turn out to be humongous, leading to severe impacts. In addition to connecting devices, IoT connects people and other entities, thereby making every IoT component vulnerable to a large range of attacks.
Blockchain, a tamper-resistant and distributed ledger that maintains consistent data records at different locations, has the capability to address IoT security concerns. Owing to the fault-tolerance capabilities, decentralized architecture, and cryptographic security benefits such as authentication, data integrity, and pseudonymous identities, security analysts and researchers consider blockchain in resolving privacy and security issues of IoT. Apart from providing data security solutions to IoT, blockchain also encounters numerous inherent IoT challenges such as limited computing power, massive numbers of devices, error-prone radio links, and low communication bandwidth. In addition, blockchain is used in identity management, voting, healthcare, government records, and supply chain. Blockchain finds application in various economic sectors to build trust and has been applied successfully to digital cryptocurrencies. Hence, blockchain technology in today’s world is becoming an emerging and disruptive future technology providing numerous opportunities to various industries.
