Data Management for Natural Scientists offers a practical guide for scientific processing of data. It covers the way from “getting hands on” experimental results to ensuring their use for addressing various scientific questions. Code snippets are provided in order to introduce the proposed workstream and to demonstrate the adjustability to specific challenges. This book does not require in-depth previous knowledge on scripting in Python or data management, but familiarity with basic concepts such as the creation of folders and files is assumed. Some previous experience using scripting languages is certainly helpful but not mandatory for understanding the key ideas of this book and following the provided code snippets. The examples presented herein were created using Python 3 on a Windows platform. Throughout this book, Python is the tool of choice for all the tasks associated with data treatment, manipulation and basic visualization.

Librarians understand the need to store, use and analyze data related to their collection, patrons and institution, and there has been consistent interest over the last 10 years to improve data management, analysis, and visualization skills within the profession. However, librarians find it difficult to move from out-of-the-box proprietary software applications to the skills necessary to perform the range of Data Science actions in code. This book will focus on teaching R through relevant examples and skills that librarians need in their day-to-day lives that includes visualizations but goes much further to include web scraping, working with maps, creating interactive reports, Machine Learning, and others. While there’s a place for theory, ethics, and statistical methods, librarians need a tool to help them acquire enough facility with R to utilize Data Science skills in their daily work, no matter what type of library they work at (academic, public or special). By walking through each skill and its application to library work before walking the reader through each line of code, this book will support librarians who want to apply Data Science in their daily work.

Category Theory: Invariances and Symmetries in Computer ScienceНазвание: Category Theory: Invariances and Symmetries in Computer Science

This book presents the formal definition of fundamental transformations in Category Theory as a mathematical language to be used in Computer Science modelling. The book focuses in particular on models with Global and Internal symmetries (in analogy to Field Theories like Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity). The second part of the book is dedicated to more advanced applications of Category Theory to Computer Science. In computer science, the lambda calculus made its first appearance in programming language LISP, which has been also the first formal programming language to use the procedures as objects of the language. Consequently, in LISP the programs and data are not distinguished, but they are all elements of a unique untyped universe. Anyway, in each programming practice, the types arise naturally, even starting from untyped universes, when the programming objects are categorized according to their usage or behavior. Since the first appearance of types in the programming language Algol 60, when the typing of variables was introduced to check at compile time the connection of instances of use with associated declarations, typing has been considered an essential method that guides a programmer in a design of a programming code.

Размер: 15.9 MB

This book focuses on the latest developments in the fields of visual AI, image processing and computer vision. It shows research in basic techniques like image pre-processing, feature extraction, and enhancement, along with applications in biometrics, healthcare, neuroscience and forensics. The book highlights algorithms, processes, novel architectures and results underlying machine intelligence with detailed execution flow of models. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has occupied almost all the fields of our lives nowadays by making machines work and think like humans. To build the ability to “see” the objects, identify scenes and act accordingly, machines should have “vision” ability. Computer Vision (CV) is considered as one of the most powerful yet challenging fields of AI. To provide visual interpretation and contextual understanding of the digital images and videos by the machines, CV and its applications are well adopted by all the domains. The state of the art of CV models are most useful for image and video analysis and prediction of various applications in real life. CV tackles all images and visual representation/interpretation-related problems using the machine’s cognitive abilities that are possible with the help of deep learning approaches. Hence, to make the readers aware about recent advances in CV image processing, this book was planned.

Scientific Computing for Scientists and Engineers is designed to teach undergraduate students relevant numerical methods and required fundamentals in scientific computing. Most problems in science and engineering require the solution of mathematical problems, most of which can only be done on a computer. Accurately approximating those problems requires solving differential equations and linear systems with millions of unknowns, and smart algorithms can be used on computers to reduce calculation times from years to minutes or even seconds. Simple programming examples. This is an introductory programming course, and students need to learn the basics before all the bells and whistles. Hence whenever possible, we give code that is as simple as possible, without overcomplicating the main ideas and without excessive commenting. Also, we assume that students have at least seen and used MATLAB in some minimal capacity. Algorithms given in the text are written in the language of MATLAB and Octave. Currently at Clemson, all students have free access to MATLAB. Octave is a free version of MATLAB, which has almost all of the same functionality. Newer versions of MATLAB have more bells and whistles, but for the purposes of this book, either MATLAB or Octave can be used. We have created a website for the codes used in this book, where all MATLAB/Octave codes from the text can be downloaded. We have also posted Python versions of the codes.

Reinforcement Learning for Sequential Decision and Optimal ControlНазвание: Reinforcement Learning for Sequential Decision and Optimal Control
Автор: Shengbo Eben Li
Издательство: Springer

Страниц: 484
Язык: английский
Формат: pdf (true)
Размер: 22.9 MB

As one of the most important Artificial Intelligence (AI) branches, Reinforcement Learning (RL) has attracted increasing attention in recent years. RL is an interdisciplinary field of trial‐and‐error learning and optimal control that promises to provide optimal solutions for decision‐making or control in large‐scale and complex dynamic processes. Have you ever wondered how AlphaZero learns to defeat the top human Go players? Do you have any clues about how an autonomous driving system can gradually develop self-driving skills beyond normal drivers? What is the key that enables AlphaStar to make decisions in Starcraft, a notoriously difficult strategy game that has partial information and complex rules? The core mechanism underlying those recent technical breakthroughs is Reinforcement Learning (RL), a theory that can help an agent to develop the self-evolution ability through continuing environment interactions.

The Ascetic Programmer: How asceticism benefits programming, science, and the artsНазвание: The Ascetic Programmer: How asceticism benefits programming, science, and the arts

Ascetic programming is the writing of computer programs using fewer lines of code or forgoing certain programming language features. Imposing restrictions on programming other than those on resources goes at least as far back as Edsger W. Dijkstra's condemnation of the goto statement. However, among possible restrictions, the one on program length is the most interesting. It has positive associations to computing, from correctness to maintainability. Asceticism originated as a spiritual practice targeting worldly pleasures and promising salvation or enlightenment. This book will focus mainly on code length restrictions and, more generally, description length restrictions, and our rewards will be plenty and varied, but less spiritual. Asceticism in programming comes in two flavors: conciseness and frugality. The former aims at delivering the same functionality with fewer lines of code; the latter's goal is identifying essential features and discarding the rest. They both apply to programming at all scales, from snippets to systems.
