A lot of the buzz about Artificial Intelligence today is due to the spectacular progress being made by the tribe of the learners. Deep Learning methods especially are demonstrating impressive performance, often overtaking other longstanding techniques. For example, speech-recognition systems based on Deep Learn ing, such as Baidu’s Deep Speech 2, are now competitive with humans at transcribing speech into text. And Google’s AlphaGo program beat one of the best players in the world at Go in early 2016 by playing itself at Go and
learning from its mistakes.
In general, machine learning helps us classify, cluster and make predictions about data. I’ll talk shortly about the state of the art in using machine learning to identify images, to drive autonomously, to recognise speech and to translate texts between languages. Machine learning is, however, being used to good effect by companies in many other domains. It is impossible to list them all but I’ll mention a few to illustrate the breadth of the field. Machine learning is being successfully used to detect malware, to predict hospital admissions, to check legal contracts for errors, to prevent money laundering, to identify birds from their song, to predict gene function, to discover new drugs, to predict crime and schedule police patrols appropriately, to identify the best crops to plant, to test software, and (somewhat controversially) to mark essays.
