This book is designed as a teach-yourself guide to data migration. It is written by a consultant with many years’ experience in data migration to give you a series of steps, developed in real-life situations, that will get you from an empty new system to one that is populated, working and backed by the user population. There are two types of reader who will find this book essential - the executive and the practitioner. This book is system-neutral. It is aimed at large-scale data migration projects visible to the end-user population. It does not cover the detail of upgrading from one version of popular software to another, unless it involves unloading and reloading data, which may face all the issues of data preparation that a move to a different software platform would entail. It does not cover changes to operating systems or hardware. This book is aimed at the gap in the methodologies that allow you to develop the perfect system but say nothing about how you get the best legacy data out of the flaky old systems you are trying to leave behind.
