This book focuses on one of the major challenges of the newly created scientific domain known as Data Science: turning data into actionable knowledge in order to exploit increasing data volumes and deal with their inherent complexity. Actionable knowledge has been qualitatively and intensively studied in management, business, and the social sciences but in computer science and engineering, its connection has only recently been established to data mining and its evolution, ‘Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining’ (KDD). Data mining seeks to extract interesting patterns from data, but, until now, the patterns discovered from data have not always been ‘actionable’ for decision-makers in Socio-Technical Organizations (STO). With the evolution of the Internet and connectivity, STOs have evolved into Cyber-Physical and Social Systems (CPSS) that are known to describe our world today. In such complex and dynamic environments, the conventional KDD process is insufficient, and additional processes are required to transform complex data into actionable knowledge.

Automated facial recognition systems compare two or more images of faces to determine whether they represent the same individual. Facial recognition technology (FRT) falls within the larger categories of biometric technology used to varying degrees by the government and private entities to identify persons. This book deals with some of the issues concerning facial recognition technology. Biometric technology uses automated processes to identify an individual through unique physical characteristics, such a fingerprints, speech patterns, or facial features. FRT can perform several functions, with the most common being face identification - the comparison of an unknown person’s face against a gallery of known persons - and face verification—confirmation of someone’s claimed identity. When an image of an unknown person is compared to a database, the technology may determine that an image in the database is sufficiently similar to register as a likely match.

The distributed setting of RDF stores in the cloud poses many challenges, including how to optimize data placement on the compute nodes to improve query performance. In this book, a novel benchmarking methodology is developed for data placement strategies; one that overcomes these limitations by using a data-placement-strategy-independent distributed RDF store to analyze the effect of the data placement strategies on query performance. Frequently used data placement strategies have been evaluated, and this evaluation challenges the commonly held belief that data placement strategies which emphasize local computation lead to faster query executions. Indeed, results indicate that queries with a high workload can be executed faster on hash-based data placement strategies than on, for example, minimal edge-cut covers. The analysis of additional measurements indicates that vertical parallelization (i.e., a well-distributed workload) may be more important than horizontal containment (i.e., minimal data transport) for efficient query processing. Two such data placement strategies are proposed: the first, found in the literature, is entitled overpartitioned minimal edge-cut cover, and the second is the newly developed molecule hash cover.
