Deploying Juniper Data Centers with EVPN VXLAN is designed for engineers and architects designing, deploying, and/or maintaining small to large data centers. This book will increase productivity and streamline processing and communication by helping you understand BGP EVPN-based VXLAN, data center design, and deployment using Junos OS/EVO and interconnecting multiple data centers for various deployment applications. Aninda Chaterjee's straightforward prose and industry experience also gives you the foundational knowledge necessary for Juniper Data Center certification from the JNCIA-DC to the JNCIE-DC.

Data centers are a cornerstone of today’s digital age and a critical part of modern IT infrastructure. With the advent of cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning, it has become imperative for network engineers to gain an understanding of how data centers are designed, deployed, and operationally managed.

Embarking on learning a new technology or domain in the networking space can be hard. What makes it harder is the need to learn a new networking operating system as well, with all its features and quirks. While this book is written with the aim of building transferrable and vendor-agnostic skills in the data center domain, the implementation is specific to the Junos network operating system and the Juniper ecosystem.

The Chapter 1 introduces the Juniper ecosystem, with a focus on helping you to gain familiarity with the Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved (commonly shortened to Junos Evolved or Junos Evo) network operating systems. These separate operating systems are often referred to generically as Junos. Architecturally, these operating systems are different (as briefly described in the following section); however, for an operator using the command line interface (CLI) to configure and interact with either operating system, functionally, there are minimal to no differences. Thus, this chapter, and the remainder of this book, uses the terms Junos, Junos OS, and Junos OS Evolved interchangeably, calling out any differences when necessary. Junos OS is a network operating system with a modular software architecture, developed on top of FreeBSD, which is an open-source operating system. Services run as daemons in their own protected memory space.
