Автор: Giles Sparrow
Издательство: Greenfinch
Год: 2015
Формат: EPUB

The Energy of Data and Distance CorrelationНазвание: The Energy of Data and Distance Correlation
Автор: Gabor J. Szekely, Maria L. Rizzo
Издательство: CRC Press
Серия: Monographs on Statistics and Applied Probability
Год: 2023
Страниц: 467

Формат: pdf (true)
Размер: 10.1 MB

Energy distance is a statistical distance between the distributions of random vectors, which characterizes equality of distributions. The name energy derives from Newton's gravitational potential energy, and there is an elegant relation to the notion of potential energy between statistical observations. Energy statistics are functions of distances between statistical observations in metric spaces. The authors hope this book will spark the interest of most statisticians who so far have not explored E-statistics and would like to apply these new methods using R. The Energy of Data and Distance Correlation is intended for teachers and students looking for dedicated material on energy statistics, but can serve as a supplement to a wide range of courses and areas, such as Monte Carlo methods, U-statistics or V-statistics, measures of multivariate dependence, goodness-of-fit tests, nonparametric methods and distance based methods.

Visualizing Mathematics: The Role of Spatial Reasoning in Mathematical Thought
Автор: Kelly S. S. Mix, Michael T. Battista
Издательство: Springer
Год: 2018
Формат: EPUB
Размер: 22 Мб
Язык: английский / English

This unique volume surveys recent research on spatial visualization in mathematics in the fields of cognitive psychology and mathematics education. The general topic of spatial skill and mathematics has a long research tradition, but has been gaining attention in recent years, although much of this research happens in disconnected subfields. This volume aims to promote interaction between researchers, not only to provide a more comprehensive view of spatial visualization and mathematics, but also to stimulate innovative new directions in research based on a more coordinated effort. It features ten chapters authored by leading researchers in cognitive psychology and mathematics education, as well as includes dynamic commentaries by mathematics education researchers on cognitive psychology chapters, and by cognitive psychologists on mathematics education chapters.

Data Science In The Library: Tools and Strategies for Supporting Data-Driven Research and InstructionНазвание: Data Science In The Library: Tools and Strategies for Supporting Data-Driven Research and Instruction
Автор: Joel Herndon
Издательство: Facet Publishing

Размер: 10.2 MB

The last two decades represent an unprecedented period in the history of data analysis. As the cost of technology has steadily decreased, access to sophisticated data tools has increased, expanding the audience for data-informed research and decision making. At the same time, new areas of research and research methodologies are now possible with the rapid growth of online data produced as a byproduct of digital commerce, file sharing and social media. Together, this confluence of inexpensive computing, plentiful data and accessible tools has created a new interdisciplinary area of research that harnesses the traditional disciplinary expertise of statisticians and computer scientists to explore a wide range of data-related questions. As more researchers and companies embrace data-driven approaches, the phrase ‘Data Science’ has become an increasingly popular term to describe this growing area of research. In its current form, the term ‘Data Science’ is easier to define by its application than by theory. It is widely understood to include a diverse range of computational, data-driven approaches to research and business analytics. In academia, this interdisciplinary space comprises a broad range of methodologies, including Machine Learning, social media analysis, spatial analytics, text analysis and web analytics to name a few.

Quantum Field Theory, as Simply as PossibleНазвание: Quantum Field Theory, as Simply as Possible
Автор: A. Zee
Издательство: Princeton University Press
Год: 2023
Страниц: 393
Язык: английский
Формат: pdf (true)
Размер: 31.2 MB

An exceptionally accessible introduction to quantum field theory. Quantum field theory is by far the most spectacularly successful theory in physics, but also one of the most mystifying. Quantum Field Theory, as Simply as Possible provides an essential primer on the subject, giving readers the conceptual foundations they need to wrap their heads around one of the most important yet baffling subjects in physics. Quantum field theory grew out of quantum mechanics in the late 1930s and was developed by a generation of brilliant young theorists, including Julian Schwinger and Richard Feynman. Their predictions were experimentally verified to an astounding accuracy unmatched by the rest of physics. Quantum field theory unifies quantum mechanics and special relativity, thus providing the framework for understanding the quantum mysteries of the subatomic world. With his trademark blend of wit and physical insight, A. Zee guides readers from the classical notion of the field to the modern frontiers of quantum field theory, covering a host of topics along the way, including antimatter, Feynman diagrams, virtual particles, the path integral, quantum chromodynamics, electroweak unification, grand unification, and quantum gravity.

An influential scientist in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) explains its fundamental concepts and how it is changing culture and society. A particular form of AI is now embedded in our tech, our infrastructure, and our lives. How did it get there? Where and why should we be concerned? And what should we do now? The Shortcut: Why Intelligent Machines Do Not Think Like Us provides an accessible yet probing exposure of Artificial Intelligence in its prevalent form today, proposing a new narrative to connect and make sense of events that have happened in the recent tumultuous past, and enabling us to think soberly about the road ahead. This book is divided into ten carefully crafted and easily digestible chapters. Each chapter grapples with an important question for AI.
