О гибели группы туристов на Северном Урале я услышал летом 1959 года, находясь на службе в Советской армии, в Ташкентской области (город ЧирчИк). Солдат нашей роты свердловчанин Ахтямов съездил в отпуск домой и сообщил в своих рассказах, что прошедшей зимой за Ивделем погибла большая группа лыжников. По его словам, в народе ходили слухи, что они попали под испытание какого-то оружия. Сообщение отпускника не произвело на меня большого впечатления: в армии часто приходится слышать о гибели.
