Калинин К-7. Тяжелый бомбардировщик. К началу 30-х годов авиационное конструкторское бюро, возглавляемое К.А. Калининым, представляло собой вполне сформировавшийся коллектив, способный решать абсолютно новые, даже неожиданные задачи в самолетостроении. Так, в плане работ КБ на 1929-1930 годы значилось задание на постройку трехмоторного пассажирского самолета К-7 (называемого также «К-тяжелый») под немецкие двигатели БМВ «Хорнет» в 500 л.с. Он предусматривал перевозку 22 пассажиров с багажом. Модель этой машины исследовалась в аэродинамической трубе ЦАГИ еще в сентябре 1928 года, а в марте следующего проект был утвержден в научно-техническом комитете ВВС. Однако от производства машины отказались, и в дальнейшем индекс К-7 присвоили трансконтинентальному самолету, который начали проектировать в 1928 году. «Идея сконструировать самолет К-7, - писал позже К.А. Калинин,- у меня зародилась давно, еще в 1925 году. В 1929 году я сформулировал свой проект, который после двух лет доработки начал осуществляться... При создании новых больших машин новые пути ведут в сторону новых схем самолетов, в сторону использования крыла для размещения грузов. Это значит, что пути идут к летающему крылу, которое и есть идеальный самолет. Чтобы совершить переход к летающему крылу, возникла необходимость построить машину по принципу «все в крыле». Первоначально проектировался цельнодеревянный самолет с пятилонжеронным крылом. Но из этого ничего не получалось - не хватало запаса прочности, поэтому после долгих споров Калинин решил перейти на цельнометаллическую сварную конструкцию с трехлонжеронным крылом
