The flying boat is a unique form of aircraft, with the ability to operate from sea or river and, in amphibian form, from land too. Over a hundred types of British flying boat and amphibian were built during a forty year period from the days of the pioneer airmen to the advent of the jet engine. Early attempts at flying from water were sometimes fraught, but during the First World War the practical military flying boat was steadily developed, serving with the Royal Naval Air Service as an important component in the campaigns waged against the naval forces of Imperial Germany - particularly her U-Boats. The inter-war period witnessed the growth in prominence of civil flying boats as commercial air routes became established worldwide, notably by Britain's Imperial Airways. Light civilian flying boats were produced for use by private owners and modest operators, while the military flying boats of the RAF were many and varied. Throughout the Second World War the flying boat defended Britain's sea routes around the globe with great success, and British examples were also employed by many of the Allied nations. Yet after the war, the type faded from widespread use and, despite resistance from enthusiasts, by the mid-1950s they had all but disappeared. The British flying boat today evokes and great nostalgia and the few remaining examples are carefully preserved for future generations to share.

In the first decade of the twentieth century, the rigid airship looked more likely to be the future of air travel and transportation than the small, rather fragile airplane. Using a lifting gas enclosed within a metal or wooden framework, rigid airships could fly longer distances and carry more passengers or cargo. Zeppelin: Rigid Airships 1893-1940 examines the rise and decline of the airship by means of individual development histories of all the fifty types of airships built across four countries during a forty year period. Beginning with Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's first rigid airship, the book examines the role played by the rigid airship in both civil and military aviation. The world's first airline, DELAG, operated passenger services using Zeppelins before the outbreak of the First World War. Between 1914 and 1918, the Germans used rigid airships for bombing raids and for patrolling the seas. After the war, the rigid airship was a candidate for providing passenger services, especially over long distances, since they were able to provide far more comfortable settings for those flying in them than the airplane.

In 1839 forces of the British East India Company crossed the Indus to invade Afghanistan on the pretext of reinstating a former king Shah Soojah to his rightful throne. The reality was that this was another step in Britain's Great Game - Afghanistan would create a buffer to any potential Russian expansion towards India. This history traces the initial, campaign which would see the British easily occupy Kabul and the rebellion that two years later would see the British army humbled. Forced to negotiate a surrender the British fled Kabul en masse in the harsh Afghan winter. Decimated by Afghan guerilla attacks and by the harsh cold and a lack of food and supplies just one European - Dr Brydon would make it to the safety of Jalalabad five days later. This book goes on to trace the retribution attack on Kabul the following year, which destroyed the symbolic Mogul Bazaar before rapidly withdrawing and leaving Afghanistan in peace for nearly a generation.
