Овладение Верденом поручалось Пятой германской армии под командованием самого наследника престола Империи - кронпринца Вильгельма Гогенцоллерна. В общей сложности ударная группировка насчитывала девятнадцать полноценных дивизий развернутых в два эшелона. К этому следует добавить еще девять дивизий оперативного резерва. Таким образом, для проведения наступления на Верден предполагалось задействовать всего двадцать восемь дивизий (совсем не много по меркам Первой мировой войны). Основной удар планировалось нанести лишь на правом берегу реки Маас по периметру от пункта Консенвуа до пункта Орн, общей протяженностью в двадцать киллометров.
