Эти аэродромы требовали для их создания и эксплуатации все больше и больше средств. И наряду с этим, подходящее место для создания большого аэродрома можно было найти не всегда. Поэтому уже с 50-х годов ХХ столетия авиаконструкторы стали серьезно задумываться над улучшениями взлетно-посадочных характеристик самолетов и их невысоких требованиях к аэродромам. Военные по обе стороны «Железного занавеса» тоже стали предъявлять заказы на разработку самолетов с укороченными взлетно-посадочными данными (STOL) и к разработке самолеты вертикального взлета-посадки. Они должны иметь возможность работать с небольших взлетно-посадочных полос и при этом иметь высокую крейсерскую скорость. On 10 May 1940 German Fallschirmjäger stormed the Dutch fort of Eben-Emael, south of Maastricht. The highly successful 'stop-gap' M3 medium tank was designed in 1941, and as adequate turret casting facilities were not yet ready, the M3 used an unusual armament configuration patterned after a French tank. British lend-lease demands led to the design of a second turret type with the US version called the Lee and the British version the Grant.
