Штурмовик-истребитель Яковлев Як-45. Война во Вьетнаме заставила обе воюющие стороны сделать определённые выводы. В первую очередь, это коснулось авиации, причём как тактики её применения, так и типов ЛА. Широко применяемые для поддержки сухопутных войск дозвуковые штурмовики A-1, A-4, A-6, OV-10A и многоцелевые сверхзвуковые истребители F-105 и F-4 обладали низкой боевой живучестью и по ряду качеств не могли эффективно выполнять функции штурмовиков. США предприняли ряд попыток исправить положение, доработав самолёты "прямо в строю". Однако полевые модификации существовавших ЛА желаемого результата не принесли. Наиболее удачной можно считать доработку под условия партизанской войны дозвукового реактивного учебно-тренировочного самолёта Cessna T-37. Кабину экипажа частично защитили бронёй, а изнутри покрыли стегаными синтетическими матами. Топливные баки стали протектированными и их заполнили пенополиуретаном. Оборудование машины дополнили несложным прицельным комплексом. Вооружение разместили на наружных узлах под крылом. Чтобы предотвратить попадание посторонних предметов в воздухозаборники, расположенные близко к земле, их закрыли сетками, которые убирались одновременно с уборкой шасси. Небольшое подразделение этих маленьких и маневренных самолётов выполнило несколько тысяч боевых вылетов, не потеряв ни одной машины. Это был потрясающий показатель, учитывая интенсивность огня, по штурмовикам с земли. Правда, угрозы этим самолётам с воздуха практически не было.
