Туполев Ту-16А. Стратегический бомбардировщик. Самолет-носитель свободнопадающих атомных бомб, первое советское массовое авиационное средство доставки ядерного оружия. В производстве обозначался "заказ 191", в эксплуатации - Ту-16А или "НА". Ту-16А, в отличие от серийных Ту-16, имел систему электрического обогрева бомбоотсека, термоизоляции и термостабилизации с целью обеспечения необходимых условий для транспортируемого самолетом-носителем атомного боеприпаса. Была введена специальная система подготовки и сброса боеприпаса, внедрены специальные меры для эффективной защиты самолета-носителя от воздействия ударной волны и светового излучения. Самолеты Ту-16А производились с 1954 года на заводе № 22. Всего до прекращения серии в 1958 году было построено 453 машины этой модификации. Это был самый массовый серийный вариант Ту-16. Как и Ту-16, Ту-16А приблизительно в равных долях были поставлены в Дальнюю Авиацию и Авиацию ВМФ. В 1960-е годы 155 Ту-16А переделали в самолеты-ракетоносцы, носители ракет типа КСР-2 и КСР-11. На начало 1980-х годов в строю еще числилось несколько десятков самолетов типа Ту-16А. Практические работы по Ту-16А начались в середине 1953-го. Для отработки системы предполагалось переоборудовать два серийных самолета под носители атомного оружия. Проектирование должно было быть закончено в ноябре 1953 года, после чего самолеты предполагалось передать для испытаний в специальную организацию, занимавшуюся вопросами ядерного вооружения Советской Армии и находившуюся на аэродроме в Багерово. Все работы по данной тематике возглавлял генерал Чернорез, внесший огромный вклад в дело перевооружения советских вооруженных сил атомным и термоядерным оружием.
