в середине 50-х годов, истребитель Як-140 до последнего времени оставался загадкой как для Запада, так и для отечественных историков авиации. Дополнительный интерес к Як-140 вызывает тот факт, что этот легкий фронтовой истребитель вполне мог составить конкуренцию широко известному МиГ-21. Время, когда проектировался Як-140, отличалось очень динамичным развитием боевой авиации, при этом чрезвычайно важное значение приобрела скорость полета. Быстрый прогресс в области аэродинамики и авиационного двигателестроения открывал такие перспективы, которые еще недавно казались фантастикой. Всего за 5-6 лет скорость истребителей возросла почти в два раза, и во многом эта погоня за скоростью шла в ущерб маневренным характеристикам. Представления авиаспециалистов о воздушном бое претерпевали серьезные изменения, чему в немалой степени способствовало появление управляемого ракетного оружия класса «воздух-воздух». Наиболее ярким примером может служить Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, который был одним из самых скоростных и маломаневренных истребителей. Конструкторы Як-140 пошли иным путем.
