Яковлев Як-100. Легкий многоцелевой вертолет. В середине 1940-х годов опытное вертолетостроение наибольшего расцвета достигло в США, где целый ряд фирм занимался проектированием и постройкой геликоптеров. Благодаря тому, что было создано большое количество аппаратов практически всех принципиальных схем, специалистам удалось сравнить положительные и отрицательные качества вертолетов разных конструкций. Анализ показал преимущество одновинтового вертолета с хвостовым винтом. Эта схема и доминировала в последующие десятилетия. Лидирующей в области вертолетостроения несомненно стала фирма Игоря Ивановича Сикорского - нашего соотечественника, который вынужден был эммигрировать в США, где жил и работал. Именно его вертолет R- 4 (S - 47) был впервые принят на вооружение американской армии в июне 1942 года. Всего фирма «Юнайтед Эйркрафт» выпустила 131 машину, часть которых поступила в Великобританию. Ещё больший успех выпал на долю следующей модели R-5 (S-48), выпущенной летом 1943-го. Безусловно, это был качественный скачок не только фирмы «Сикорский», но и всего мирового вертолетостроения в целом. Даже сейчас, спустя более полувека, R-5 поражает совершенством своих форм. Построенный по классической одновинтовой схеме, он имел взлётную массу в два раза, а полезную нагрузку в три раза большую, чем у его предшественников. Появление столь удачного вертолёта, способного решать целый ряд специальных задач, не могло остаться незамеченным и в СССР. В конце 1947 года задание на постройку вертолёта одновинтовой схемы получили два коллектива - только что созданное вертолётное ОКБ М.Л. Миля и ОКБ А.С. Яковлева
