Яковлев УТ-1 (АИР-14). Учебно-тренировочный самолет. В середине 1930-х годов в ряде ведущих авиационных держав получила распространение концепция специализированного учебно-тренировочного самолета для подготовки летчиков-истребителей. Он должен был выполнять две функции: завершать обучение курсантов летных школ и обеспечивать тренировку пилотов строевых частей. Над такими машинами работали в Германии, Франции, Италии. В нашей стране для подобных целей использовали устаревшие истребители И-5. Но боевой истребитель, пусть и недостаточно современный, недешев, да и эксплуатация его довольно дорога. Возникла идея внедрить взамен И-5 специальную учебную машину, по своим пилотажным качествам более сходную с новыми истребителями ВВС РККА и в то же время простую в производстве и эксплуатации. В конструкторском бюро А.С. Яковлева с весны 1935 года начали работу над проектом самолета АИР-14 (он же просто «№ 14»). В результате получился очень маленький, компактный и изящный самолет смешанной конструкции. Компоновка машины во многом повторяла более ранние проекты Яковлева. Внешне самолет сильно напоминал уменьшенный вариант учебного двухместного АИР-10 (УТ-2), но по конструкции довольно существенно отличался от последнего. Самолет технологически был очень прост и изготовление опытного образца не заняло много времени. В конце 1935 года он уже совершил свой первый полет. Как и все яковлевские новинки, машину облетывал Ю.И. Пионтковский. АИР-14 имел «фирменную» окраску - самолет весь был красный, а на руле поворота - красные и белые горизонтальные полосы
