Как уже отмечалось, дальность Ту-22 оказалась ниже заданной, увеличить же ее можно было лишь путем дозаправки топливом в полете. В начале 1960-х гг. процедура дозаправки бомбардировщиков Ту-95 и 3М была достаточно хорошо освоена строевыми экипажами, поэтому установка на Ту-22 системы дозаправки в полете по схеме "конус" ни у кого не встретила возражений. В 1962-1963 гг. аналогичными устройствами (доработав топливную систему) оснастили два серийных самолета (No. 3083012 и No. 901). При этом машины получили обозначение Ту-22РД. Буква "Д" в этих индексах обозначала именно наличие системы дозаправки. Топливо перекачивалось с танкера "изделие Н" - переоборудованного Ту-16...
