First published in 1981 to coincide with the Legion's 150th anniversary, this remains the 'daddy' of Martin Windrow's numerous Osprey books on the subject. It's first and foremost about uniforms, so it's more of a reference book for dipping into than a narrative history, but there's a useful summary running throughout the book of the many campaigns which kept the Legion busy in its first century and a half.
