This book combines various approaches to the study of grammar. It does not adhere to a single approach such as transformational grammar or traditional grammar. Because most people have studied some traditional grammar in school, reference is made to it throughout the text. But its shortcomings are also discussed. The book begins with an overview of the English sentence. Each chapter builds on what has gone before so that by the end of the book, the reader will have a comprehensive understanding of the different shapes that sentences can take. Victor N. Okada is Professor of English, Emeritus, at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where he taught undergraduate and graduate classes in eighteenth-century British literature, contemporary American poetry, writing, and English grammar.
