Вишивка на українських землях виникла дуже давно, може навіть перед християнською добою. Первісна вишивка залежала від домашнього вибору полотна й ниток, фарбованих рослинними барвами та натуральними речовинами. Українську вишивку можна розділити на два роди: лічильну та нелічильну.
Лічильна вишивка виконується на рівномірно тканому льняному полотні або бавовняному: хрестиком, гладдю, вирізуванням, рушниковим швом, яворівкою та ін. Вживають кольори яскраві, чисті та натуральні. Якщо полотно є загусте, то вживається канва, яка потім витягується.
Нелічильні вишивки виконуються на шовку або на будь-якому полотні шовковими нитками пастельних кольорів гаптом або церковним швом.
