Talking with customers every day is a delight. We get to learn about their work, their backgrounds, and their aspirations. And of late, encountering corporate development practitioners new to their role has been a trend. During a call and DealRoom demo in early Q2, a young gentleman confided that the first time he would be a transaction lead was the first time he would be on a deal on his own. Although hesitant, he was quite excited about taking on the new role. He was elevated into the role from being head of a business unit. And the corporate investment thesis is planned for 3-4 acquisitions this year. His time spent with us was more valuable than simply looking at software. His time with us was about helping him, considering all the moving parts to building an M&A function from scratch.
While that may seem exciting, building out an M&A function is not easy, especially if you have no previous experience. They sought playbooks or guidelines on how to do it or searched for seasoned peers who could give them 15 minutes of their time. Yet, stringing it all together still makes hearts pause as to whether they are truly starting down the yellow brick road. This gap in the industry prompted us to write this book.
