The speed of change and advancements in technology, coupled with higher expectations of consumers in the 21st century, far exceed those experienced previously. This period of the fourth Industrial Revolution has introduced cyber physical systems and is characterized by such features as ubiquitous digitization, technology blending of the biological and physical (man versus machine), continuous reinvention, autonomous systems, genetic editing, mobile super-computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics, all coupled with the goal of supporting sustainable ecosystems. With such advancements, it is inconceivable to think we can continue only with the existing and traditional applications and approaches to project management.

The interesting latitude of topics is further illustrated when considering the breadth of the Internet of Things (IoTs). IoTs increase connectedness between devices, machines, objects and people; ­creates communities of interest over collaboration network; and lends growth to the number of large, complex systems, composed often of other systems under a “System of Systems” arrangement. This creates challenges in security, interoperability, reliability, regulation compliance and so forth. The consumer also takes on an expendable mentality, which is further reinforced by products being developed with intentional obsolescence considerations. The toolbox explores techniques for handling this growing importance of adaptability, agility and resilience.
