This book introduces Power Electronics by emphasizing computer simulation using the Python programming language. It is primarily a senior undergraduate text but can also be used for a post-graduate course on DC-DC switch power mode converters. It is also a reference for practicing engineers.

Theoretical analysis of the circuits and approximate calculations precede the simulations, and the reader is taken by hand through the numerical analysis. Finally, when the programs are presented, they are simple and easy to understand. Python is a computational language that is easy to learn and has the libraries necessary for simulations.

The author has observed that students’ interest in Power Electronics is enhanced when they learn to simulate the circuits without depending on a general-purpose program. This book encourages the reader to run the programs and perform numerical experiments. Quite a few simulations in the later chapters have been left as exercises for the reader. Many feedback control issues have been extensively discussed in the chapter on non-isolated DC-DC converters.

The programs provided at the end of each chapter have been written in the Python programming language. It is a simple language and the programs are interpreted. The programs have been created and tested using the Anaconda distribution. The IDE and interpreter versions used in the simulations are Spyder 4.2.5 and Python 3.8.8. The programs are simple and each program has been divided into three functions: (1) the device characteristics, (2) the solver function, and (3) the main input—output function. It should be emphasized that this book does not teach programming in Python. The student should consult the free on-line resources besides an introductory book that is available in the market.

Power electronics is an interdisciplinary area of study and the undergraduate will encounter this course after exposure to circuit analysis, semiconductor devices, signal processing, electromagnetism, and elementary control theory. Semiconductor devices and electromagnetic devices have been briefly reviewed in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, respectively. However, control theory and Fourier analysis are treated as pre-requisites.

This book follows the path laid out in some of the classic power electronics books. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 cover diode-based AC/DC converters. Thyristor-based AC/DC converters are discussed in Chapter 5. Basic DC/DC switch-mode converters are dealt with in some detail in Chapter 6 and their isolated versions are covered in Chapter 7. Resonant DC/DC converters are discussed in Chapter 8. Inverters, i.e., DC/AC converters, form the subject matter of Chapter 9. Though lists of problems have not been provided, the text is seeded with many circuits that may be simulated.

This book is a senior undergraduate text on power electronics, with its emphasis on simulations. There are several approaches for simulating power electronic circuits. One approach is to use a general purpose circuit simulation program that will accept the circuit parameters as input data and will provide the response waveforms. Another approach is to write programs in a high-level language and plot the response waveforms. The latter approach has been adopted in this book.
