This book helps readers understand the basic concepts of electronic circuits. The emphasis is on amplifiers, filters and audio circuits. Other applications such as oscillators, multivibrators, logic and control circuits are also included. Although basic concepts are presented with the necessary theoretical background, the author uses descriptions of basic electronic circuits in a very compact form and the circuit functions are described in a very accessible manner.

In this edition, you will find a revised and expanded version of the book. Some new sections have been added, like the explanation of the three-phase supply network, switched-mode power supply circuits, the full-bridge push-pull amplifiers, the heterodyne radio receiver and velocity control of the induction motor. Examples of the VSI frequency converters have been included, and the V/f-ratio velocity control explained. The section “Linearity” has been updated, including more discussion on linearization. More remarks on the efficiency of power amplifiers and loudspeakers have been included.

The purpose of this book is to provide comprehensive and compact information on the concepts and devices in the field of basic electronics. Most used and important circuits are discussed, with an explanation of their functioning, from the practical point of view. However, to understand how circuits work, certain general theoretical background and knowledge are needed. So, the book contains such concepts as complex numbers, Fourier and Laplace transform and Z-transform. Though these are high mathematics concepts, they are used here in the most simplified form. For example, the Laplace transform is used here as a tool that simplifies and not complicates things. In fact, the only thing that the beginner really should understand is that the “s” variable of the Laplace transform can be treated as the differentiating operator. This allows us to define transfer functions of linear devices. As for the discrete-time, digital signal processing, the Z-transform is used.

The book starts with the elemental concepts of electric charge, current and voltage (Chap. 1). The methods of circuit analysis are mentioned. The properties of resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers and others are explained. The basic electronic elements are explained, including diodes, transistors, thyristors and other mostly used devices.

In Chap. 2, we discuss the transistor-based voltage amplifiers, including power amplifiers of class A, B, C and D. Practical hints and remarks are provided. Chapter 3 “Filters” starts with the concepts of circuit dynamics. Then, a number of signal processing circuits called filters are explained, including passive RC and RLC circuits, and the first- and second-order active filters based on operational amplifiers. Then, the higher order filters are discussed, using as examples the Chebyshev and Butterworth filters.

Oscillating circuits and signal generators are discussed in Chap. 4. The phase-shift, Colpittz, Hartley, Wien bridge and twin T oscillators are explained. The mono-stable, relaxation and multivibrator circuits are discussed.

Remarks on voltage and supply power sources can be found in Chap. 5. The difference between ideal and real supply sources is mentioned, and the practical implementations are shown. Voltage regulators are considered, and related circuits, like zero-crossover, are included.

Chapter 6 is an introduction to electric control circuits. It contains some remarks on feedback control systems and the electrical realization of the two-point and continuous PID controller.

The elemental concepts of the digital signal processing can be found in Chap. 7. The Z-transform is explained in its most simplified form. The Z-transfer function is used and the relation to the continuous version of the devices is discussed. Such problems as aliasing and frequency response are mentioned. Finally, in Chap. 8 “Miscellaneous”, several useful applications of integrated circuits and logical gates are included. Basic types of logic gates are discussed, and the circuits like adder, pulse generator, counter and others are discussed.
