The insertion of communication networks in feedback control loops complicates analysis and synthesis of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), and network-induced uncertainties may degrade system control performances. Thus, this book researches networked delay compensation and event-triggered control approaches for a series of CPSs subject to network-induced uncertainties.

The cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are new class of networked embedded systems, and tightly integrate computation, networking, and physical processes. Different from the traditional point-to-point system architecture, CPSs are spatially distributed systems, and the signals between the system components are transmitted via a communication network, such as the remote control of several mobile units, arrays of micro-actuators, and underwater acoustics. With the development of the science and technology, modern control systems are becoming more and more complex. Due to the limitation of space area, traditional local control approaches cannot satisfy the actual requirements, gradually. At the right moment, the networked embedded system is born to deal with the spatial control problems. Then, on the basis of the networked embedded system, cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are proposed as the extension in both size and complexity through control, computation, and communication together. The main advantages of CPSs are low cost, reduced weight and power requirements, simple installation and maintenance, as well as high reliability. However, it should be pointed out that with the utilization of communication networks, some challenging issues, such as network communication delay, data dropout, signal quantization, event-triggered communication, and so on, should be taken into account. In view of these challenges, the networked and event-triggered control approaches are researched in this book.

Due to the limited bit rate of the communication channels, node waiting time to send out a packet via a busy network channel, or because the time for signal processing and propagation is high, the network communication delay is unavoidable. In CPSs, the delays may occur in both the sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator network channels. Besides, the network congestion, bit transmission error, link failure, and so on can easily lead to data dropouts. In order to avoid the network congestion and reduce the bandwidth of the network, one effective way is to quantize the signals before transmission, and then the real-valued signals are quantized as the piecewise signals; however, the ideal control performance will be affected by the quantization errors. Moreover, the CPSs subject to network communication delay or data dropouts can also be modeled as the time-delay, switched, or stochastic systems, then the stability conditions of the resulting closed-loop systems can be developed by applying the time-delay, switched, or stochastic system analysis approaches.

The authors begin with an introduction to the concepts and challenges of CPSs, followed by an overview of networked control approaches and event-triggered control strategies in CPSs. Then, networked delay compensation and event-triggered control approaches are proposed for CPSs with network communication delay, data dropout, signal quantization and event-triggered communication. More specifically, networked delay compensation approaches are proposed for linear/nonlinear networked controlled plant with time-varying and random network communication delays and data dropouts. To reduce computational burden and network communication loads in CPSs, event-triggered control, self-triggered control, co-design of event-triggered control and quantized control techniques, and event-triggered disturbance rejection control approaches are also presented.

This book is an essential text for researchers and engineers interested in cybersecurity, networked control, and CPS. It would also prove useful for graduate students in the fields of science, engineering, and computer science.
