The use of the optical spectrum for wireless communications has gained significant interest in recent years. Applications range from low-rate simplex transmission links using existing embedded CMOS cameras in smartphones, referred to as optical camera communications (OCC), mobile light fidelity (LiFi) networking in homes, offices, urban and sub-sea environments to free-space gigabit interconnects in data centers and point-to-point long-range wireless backhaul links outdoors and in space. This exciting book focuses on the use of optical wireless communications (OWC) for mobile use cases. Channel modeling techniques are provided for mobile multiuser scenarios, and will introduce key building blocks to achieve LiFi cellular networks achieving orders of magnitude improvements of area spectral efficiency compared to state-of-the-art. Challenges that arise from moving from a static point-to-point visible light link to a LiFi network that is capable of serving hundreds of mobile and fixed nodes are discussed. An overview of recent standardization activities and the commercialization challenges of this disruptive technology is also provided.

We have enjoyed three decades of wireless personal communications. The fifth generation (5G) cellular networks opened the door for a paradigm shift towards wireless machine-type communications. This has brought new challenges, such as enabling ultra-low latency, greater resilience, and enhanced security. The digital revolution eventually means that everything will be connected. Up until now, we primarily used the radio frequency (RF) spectrum in wireless communications. A future paradigm shift will be to also use the optical spectrum for wireless connectivity. There have been multiple attempts to commercialize optical wireless communications in the past. Therefore, it is legitimate to ask: what has changed? What really has changed is the need to expand wireless networks into space and subsea, the ever-increasing scarcity of available RF spectrum required to fulfill the demand, the need for new levels of physical layer security, the trend towards net-zero communication networks, and global availability. All of these new circumstances make it imperative to consider other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. The optical spectrum is the closest to be harnessed as there are plenty of devices and subsystems due to the tremendous advancements in optical fiber communications during the last decades and new developments such as silicon photonics and III-V semiconductors. In addition, a large body of knowledge exists in optical wireless communications (OWC) as this field has been studied for many decades. In recent years, the industrialization of OWC systems gained new momentum with many new companies entering the market. Alongside this trend, standardization efforts have increased significantly across multiple bodies. Therefore, we felt that it is exactly the right time for a textbook like this.
