Artificial Intelligence (AI) can successfully help in solving real-world problems in power transmission and distribution systems because AI-based schemes are fast, adaptive, and robust and are applicable without any knowledge of the system parameters. This book considers the application of AI methods for the protection of different types and topologies of transmission and distribution lines. It explains the latest pattern-recognition-based methods as applicable to detection, classification, and location of a fault in the transmission and distribution lines, and to manage smart power systems including all the pertinent aspects.

Power networks are currently more sophisticated due to growing interconnected systems, flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) technology, high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines, distributed generations (DGs), and micro-grids. Therefore, the protection of high voltage AC (HVAC) power transmission and distribution lines is vital to provide these systems’ reliability and security. Electro-mechanical, electronic, digital, numerical, and today’s smart relays represent a trend in the field of protection schemes of the power system network. Since the performance of some schemes of the conventional relays has some shortcomings, the new methods such as the pattern-recognition-based methods can improve the schemes’ performance. Simultaneously, using meters, PMUs, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), communication systems, and automation systems make available information about the whole power system. A protective relay to protect the power system networks from abnormal conditions is necessary with an accurate operation and smart functions. The main focus of this book is to consider the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods in the field of protection of different types and topologies of transmission and distribution lines to cover various aspects of transmission and distribution lines protection from academia and industry perspectives.

AI can successfully help in solving real-world problems in transmission and distribution systems. AI-based schemes are fast, adaptive, and robust and are applicable without any knowledge of the system parameters. Fault detection, fault detection during power swing, high impedance fault detection, fault classification, fault location, and others are examples of AI applications in power systems. These schemes can be used as auxiliary functions in conventional-based methods for the protection purpose. Compared to conventional methods, AI offers new advantages to deal with uncertainties and is a useful tool for solving complex and non-linear problems. Besides, AI-based solutions are good alternatives to make a decision when some data of the system is missing, or some parameters of the system are not available.

Features:

Provides essential insight on uses of different AI techniques for pattern recognition, classification, prediction, and estimation, exclusive to power system protection issues

Presents an introduction to enhanced electricity system analysis using decision-making tools

Covers AI applications in different protective relaying functions

Discusses issues and challenges in the protection of transmission and distribution systems

Includes a dedicated chapter on case studies and applications

This book is aimed at graduate students, researchers, and professionals in electrical power system protection, stability, and smart grids.
