Organizations have a pressing need for sustainable industrialization that minimizes waste, reduces environmental impacts, and promotes resource efficiency, all while embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technological advancements.

Covering theoretical and practical dimensions, the book addresses issues that industries encounter when AI is being implemented within their assembly lines from ethical considerations to labor transformation struggles as well as technical limitations and challenges related with data management. The chapters discuss ideas related to automation, predictive maintenance and reducing wastage; and how we can overcome the issues of these through solutions. Topics range from the intersection of AGI with sustainable innovation and how to engineer smart production systems, to a shift towards regenerative design principles.

The main theme of the book is to narrow down this gap between such advanced technologies and real-time applications based on Circular Economy. The publication comes at an important time when there is a pressing global imperative to reduce environmental impact without compromising on economic competitiveness.

The convergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Industry 5.0 indicates a transformative era for industrial systems to move beyond the automation-centric focus of Industry 4.0 towards a human-centric, sustainable and resilient system. This chapter explores how AGI, with its capacity for human-like reasoning and cross-domain learning, serves as a crucial enabler for the core objectives of Industry 5.0. It examines AGI’s role in advancing circular manufacturing through optimised resource efficiency, waste minimisation and the implementation of regenerative, zero-waste production cycles. The analysis extends to AGI-controlled automation that creates collaboration between humans and machines to enhance decision-making and operational adaptability. Furthermore, the chapter addresses critical challenges in data management, interoperability and security for seamless AGI integration. By inspecting future directions such as bio-inspired processes and human–smart system interdependence, this work places AGI as the basis for achieving the sustainable, adaptive and inclusive industrial ecosystems envisioned by Industry 5.0.

Neuromorphic manufacturing is a core transformation in industrial automation, as it utilises principles that are modelled after the human brain to produce very efficient, adaptable and sustainable manufacturing systems. This is inextricably tied to the development of AGI, because neuromorphic computing architectures will be the hardware and computational infrastructure with which AGI will be able to run with previously unseen energy efficiency and real-time responsiveness. Neuromorphic devices are capable of reducing the power consumption of today’s AI systems to less than 1/100 of current levels. Neuromorphic manufacturing will deliver new forms of sustainability as the industry evolves to Industry 5.0, offering intelligent, decentralised and dynamically adaptive production processes that reduce resource use and waste. The conventional computing architectures which decouple processing and memory units are hit by the so-called memory wall issue in which data movement between the processing and memory units is energy-intensive. Neuromorphic computing, in contrast to traditional computing, resembles the brain in that it combines processing and memory in a single system to enable highly parallel and event-driven computation, which can significantly cut power consumption. This energy efficiency is also inherent to neuromorphic computing, which makes it a perfect basis for implementing energy-intensive AGI systems in manufacturing.

The research presented here is relevant for industry professionals, policymakers, and academic researchers, as it explains the perspectives on the convergence of AGI and circular manufacturing, providing readers with the tools they need to drive forward Industry 5.0 innovations and lead the shift toward a more sustainable future.
