This textbook introduces the use of lasers in manufacturing. Starting with the generation and the properties of laser beams, it covers the interaction mechanisms between laser radiation and workpieces, which are essential for a successful process design. Selected, industrially relevant manufacturing processes are used to illustrate the link between fundamental knowledge and technological implementation. The content has been developed for teaching purposes and reflects the latest scientific findings from current research. This textbook has been developed and recommended for university courses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Although the objective of the book, to follow the holistic approach of the research also in teaching, is reflected in its structural organization, the main focus is placed on the physical fundamentals and technological circumstances of the most important processes performed with the laser as a thermal tool. Accordingly, after covering the laser beam properties relevant to material processing, a brief overview of the most common laser types in this field and a concise presentation of the necessary system components are provided. A substantial part of the book is then devoted to a detailed discussion of energy deposition. Starting with the fundamentals of absorption, thermal effects in the workpiece, the resulting power-density dependent changes in the states of matter – melting, vaporization, and plasma formation – and their retroactive consequences on the energy deposition itself are discussed. Particular attention is given to fluid dynamic phenomena, which are crucial both for process efficiency and for the achievable quality of the machining process.
