Subsea Robotics addresses the complex challenges in underwater oceanographic data collection, submerged infrastructure inspection, and subsea defense missions. This book offers a comprehensive, system‑level perspective on subsea robotics by integrating engineering fundamentals with real‑world deployment practices. It covers design, propulsion, autonomy, navigation, communication, and operational standards. By combining core engineering principles with deployment realities, the book shows how subsea robots are designed and built to meet real‑world constraints.
This book is focused more on the engineering aspects of designing, integrating, testing, and deploying unmanned underwater vehicles. It describes AUVs as well as ROVs (including manipulators), covering their design process, equipment, and technologies, but without mathematical or control theory rigour. While drawing upon Indian examples, the book highlights the state-of-the-art in various domains of subsea robotics and emerging trends for the future. I hope it will be found useful by students as well as industry practitioners, seeking familiarity with a non-core discipline, or exploring technology solutions for various aspects of AUVs and ROVs, from their design to deployment.
Unmanned (or Uncrewed) underwater vehicles (UUVs) include autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Together, these vehicles and associated systems for operating underwater are referred to here as "Subsea Robotics". UUVs have brought transformative capabilities to ocean explo- ration and exploitation. These platforms multiply human reach across scientific, industrial, and defence domains, enabled by advances in miniaturised electronics, materials science, computing capability, and Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence.
Features:
Explores interdisciplinary integration of systems for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs)
Explains autonomy architecture, control architecture, and human–machine interfaces for UUVs
Shares practical experiences from UUV operations and examples of underwater survey missions
Discusses energy and propulsion options, requirements, limitations, and key design factors
Includes applications, case studies, missions, and examples illustrating the development of UUVs
This book is intended for researchers and graduate students in ocean engineering, naval architecture, robotics, and electrical engineering.
